about
I wrote Shaking Earth because I could no longer hold the anger and disbelief at the choices and decisions of our leaders without falling into dark thinking.
This summer, I had a conversation with a friend who felt that our political and social woes were beyond hope. The system was so broken, we should just let it implode --why bother voting?
I don't wholly disagree with my friend about the state of things. At times it is hard to believe that our vote can make a difference. Systemic racism, voter suppression, politicians' disregard for the people they have been charged to represent, the sickness of unchecked capitalism, and the chronic meanness that those who are in power invite and celebrate as the new normal? These political illnesses seem insurmountable towers.
But all of these things are standing on shaking earth. Remember, there are more of us than there are of them. And change is coming.
Vote, watch, learn, coordinate, resist. We've got work to do.
lyrics
You’re stealing, you’re thieving
A trail of blood you’re leaving
“Cage the children,” you say
but that’s just politics for another day
No secret, your agenda
the power you have is just lent to ya
‘cause justice is coming like the sun
You can’t hide behind a suit, can’t hide behind paper
Can’t hide behind a long-haired blue-eyed savior
What you did, have done
So you think you’ve won
You’re a predator of habit, you’re nothing new
in an ivory tower with a made-up view
Think you’re saved by your birth
You’re standing on the shaking earth.
You’re talking, you’re bleating
a circle of words with truth resceeding
Talk your wondrous plan
Think you’re a god; Lawd, you’re barely a man
No secret, your agenda
the power you have is just lent to ya
‘cause justice is coming you better run
You can’t hide behind a suit, can’t hide behind paper
Can’t hide behind a long-haired blue-eyed savior
What you did, have done
So you think you’ve won
You’re a predator of habit, you’re nothing new
in an ivory tower with a made-up view
Think you’re saved by your birth
You’re standing on the shaking earth
You’re stalling, you’re falling
from something that’s not your calling
You’re a debt we will pay
Take your bow now son, ‘cause it’s in the play
No secret, your agenda
the power you have is just lent to ya
‘cause justice is coming like the sun
You can’t hide behind a suit, can’t hide behind paper
Can’t hide behind a long-haired blue-eyed savior
What you did, have done
So you think you’ve won
You’re a predator of habit, You’re nothing new
in an ivory tower with a made-up view
Think you’re saved by your birth
You’re standing on the shaking earth.
